Julie A. Kmec, PhD

Professor of Sociology, Washington State University

 

Julie A. Kmec is a Professor of Sociology at Washington State University. Her research focuses on workplace gender and race inequality, including how organizational practices and policies affect organizations and workers. Mainly how their diversity-oriented human resource practices shape the work context, including job sex segregation. Her research also explores the connection between parental status, gender, and work, including how work-life reconciliation policies shape work outcomes and how ideal worker norms influence work outcomes for parents. She is also investigating women’s under representation in engineering in the US by looking to different countries where women’s engineering participation is high (Tunisia, Malaysia, and Jordan).

She serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Sociology Compass. In addition to regularly contributing to the ASA’s Organizations, Occupations, and Work section blog, she also serves on the editorial boards of Social Science Research, Social Problems, Research in the Sociology of Work, and Work & Occupations.  Kmec holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
